Upcoming Virtual Nevada Local Technical Assistance Program Trainings

Trainings are a great opportunity to advance your knowledge in your particular field. Nevada Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) provides a range of trainings each quarter. Review the trainings below to view full details, including enrollment information.

Pothole Patching and Repair
Tuesday, October 7, 2025
1:00pm – 3:00pm PT

$20

Using proper patching and repair techniques can improve structural integrity and restore rideability for pavements experiencing local failures. This training compares partial- and full-depth repair techniques along with materials used to implement them. It will teach participants to manage drainage systems effectively and efficiently.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
– Identify the types of distresses best addressed by each treatment.
– Describe recommended materials and mixtures for each treatment.
– Summarize recommended construction procedures and key quality control activities for each treatment.

Managing Roadway Drainage Systems
Thursday, October 9, 2025
9:00am – 11:30am PT

$20

Drainage systems are a key asset to maintain. Drainage maintenance is critical for extending the life of pavements, as drainage systems control water flow along maintainable pathways. Routine inspection identifies maintenance needs and lessens the potential for flooding. This includes inspections of shoulders, ditches, pipes, and culverts. This training teaches participants to manage drainage systems effectively and efficiently.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
– Select an appropriate treatment, given the type of drainage asset and its current condition.
– List types of drainage assets to be inspected.
– Identify information to be collected during an inspection.
– Determine if the condition requires a critical, major, or routine maintenance response.

Barrier Basics
Wednesday, November 5, 2025
8:00am – 10:30am PT

$20

This training explores the basics of longitudinal roadside barriers. Discussion will focus on why and when barriers are needed on the roadway, review the types and characteristics of barriers, and find out where to locate guidance for placing and installing barriers. Finally, there will be a review of maintenance requirements for roadside barriers and discover the important role maintenance plays in keeping the barriers performing as they should. Participants will have a chance to use resources, such as the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Roadside Design Guide as well as Nevada-specific design guides and specifications, to answer questions and make decisions about real-world scenarios you might encounter when placing barriers.

Learning Objectives:
– Given scenarios and the NCHRP 656 criteria, rank the priority for repairing damaged barriers.
– Identify several standards for barriers selection and placement.
– Identify warrants for the use of barriers.
– Compare the benefits and challenges of different types of barriers and end treatments.
– Explain three criteria for barrier placement.
– List basic elements of barrier inspection.

Sign Maintenance Management
Wednesday, November 12, 2025
12:00pm – 2:30pm PT

$20

This training teaches how to implement a successful sign program at the local level. The training uses practical exercises and resources, such as the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and state guidelines, to provide a firm foundation in the purpose and requirements for sign usage, installation, and maintenance.

Learning Objectives:
– Describe the six elements of a sign management system.
– Describe the role, features, and urgency of repair for four sign types.
– Explain state and local requirements for choosing sign materials including face sheeting, backing, and supports.
– Apply MUTCD guidance as well as Nevada Standard Plans and Specifications to selected scenarios.
