FHWA web-based course: Successfully Managing Construction Scheduling and Risk

The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA’s) National Highway Institute (NHI) has developed the new Successfully Managing Construction Scheduling and Risk (FHWA-NHI-134049) web-based course. This web-based training (WBT) is designed for journeyman or intermediate level State Departments of Transportation (DOT) representatives and other contractor agencies, specifically project engineers, inspectors, project managers, construction managers, resident engineers, and project administrators overseeing field construction.

The WBT provides practical guidance to staff charged with completing construction on time, including concepts for using the schedule to proactively manage project risk. The course does not require familiarity with scheduling software and is especially valuable for field staff who manage contract specifications, but do not work with scheduling methods in depth. While built upon critical path method principles, many of the project management concepts are transferable to any scheduling approach.

This WBT uses a “gamified” approach to lead participants through more interactive learning, including “what if” decision-making scenarios where they score points towards securing a “career-building opportunity”. Participants learn how owners can more effectively use schedules for successful construction execution; from project planning during design, throughout field project management, and collaboration with their contractor team.

Upon completing this WBT, participants will be able to:
• Demonstrate how to validate that a project’s pre-bid schedule and specifications are reasonable and achievable.
• Determine the contractual acceptability of a contractor’s baseline schedule for a construction project.
• Determine whether a contractor’s schedule update is accurate, complete, and meets contract requirements.
• Determine strategies and tactics that ensure project progress meetings are effective for proactively collaborating with the contractor to meet the contract schedule.
• Demonstrate how to assess proposed time extensions for reasonableness and implications.
