USDOT Funding Resources and Opportunities
The USDOT Discretionary Grants Dashboard provides communities with an overview of discretionary grant opportunities that can help meet their transportation infrastructure needs. The Dashboard also includes Federal grant programs outside of DOT that may be of particular interest to rural communities. The below list spotlights just a few of the currently open funding opportunities – visit the Grants Dashboard to find more or check out the calendar of open and upcoming grant opportunities!

• FHWA has announced an important change to the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Program that will benefit Native American and Alaska Native communities: Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) funds can now be used to meet the 20% non-federal match requirement under the SS4A program. Grant awards from the Tribal Transportation Program Safety Fund (TTPSF) can be proposed to match previously funded SS4A grant awards or fund independent components of a larger project proposed for SS4A funding. However, receiving a TTPSF or SS4A grant does not guarantee that a Tribe will be awarded a grant from the other source. With this determination, USDOT believes more Tribes will be able to apply for and benefit from the $1 billion per year SS4A Program. Most importantly, Native American and Alaska Native communities will now be better positioned to benefit from the program’s initiatives to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries.

o The TTPSF is accepting applications through January 15, 2024.
o On October 27, 2023, USDOT announced 235 grants totaling $82 million for the FY 2023 SS4A program to regional, local, and Tribal communities for planning and demonstration projects to improve safety and help prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways. Learn about the selected FY23 projects – 11 of the 2023 SS4A awards were to Tribes with a total award amount of $4.17 million. In December, SS4A will announce additional Planning and Demonstration grants and Implementation Grants. SS4A will publish the FY2024 NOFO and is expected to begin accepting applications in February 2024.
