National Public Works Week: May 19-25, 2024

National Public Works Week will be observed during May 19 to May 25, 2024, to recognize the impact of public works in our daily lives. This includes highway and road maintenance and improvements; sanitation, water, and utility services; as well as work performed on dams, levees, and power grids. The week-long observation also sheds light on the brave and essential role of employees engaged in public works whether it be front-line workers, consultants, and office jobs that make maintenance and projects successful.

Public agencies and individuals who work with public agencies are encouraged to develop and participate in activities to recognize the impact of our daily responsibilities. Please check the American Public Works Association (APWA) website for additional suggested activities, but here are a few examples:

• Ask elected officials to make a proclamation for National Public Works Week
• Improve the community’s environment such as through hosting a public grounds clean-up
• Develop a public works exhibit
• Host an employee appreciation day

For individuals wishing to participate in the Greater Sacramento area, the Sacramento Chapter of the APWA is hosting a public works appreciation dinner and fundraiser for the Education Endowment Fund (EEF) on Wednesday, May 22, 2024. The EEF provides universities with awards grants for engineering and science programs to local universities and community colleges including Sacramento State, University of the Pacific, Chico State, and UC Davis.
