The National Highway Institute announces a new, no-cost web-based training: FHWA-NHI-142080 Bicycle Facility Design. Image of a separated bike lane, with a directional arrow.
As people across the world turn to alternative modes of transportation, it is more important than ever to ensure bike lanes and other bicycle facilities are appropriately designed with safety and connectivity in mind.  The National Highway Institute’s new web-based training (WBT), Bicycle Facility Design, provides a comprehensive understanding of bikeway design concepts and considerations. Over the course of nine modules, you’ll learn critical planning and design information that will help you deliver high-quality, safe, multimodal projects efficiently and effectively.

Bicycle Facility Design builds on the Federal Highway Administration’s support for design flexibility as well as current national standards and guidelines, with the goal of reducing multimodal conflicts and achieving connected networks.

Developed for practitioners at State Departments of Transportation (DOTs), local governments, and Metropolitan Planning Organizations, this course would benefit any transportation planners, advocates, and other stakeholders looking to make informed decisions on bicycle planning and facility design.

As a WBT, this course can be taken remotely, with the flexibility to work through the modules at your own pace. Offered by the authoritative source in transportation training, you’ll gain the knowledge you need to contribute to safe, comfortable, and connected bike networks in communities throughout the U.S.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
– Reference existing national planning and design resources that inform the planning, design, and implementation of multimodal transportation projects.
– Identify principles of bicyclist safety, comfort, and connectivity as part of the transportation planning process.
– Select the appropriate bikeway type based on, and in context of, various factors.
– Identify key design considerations for each facility type.

You will also earn continuing education units (CEUs). The American Planning Association has approved this training for 0.8 credits toward American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) maintenance.
