FHWA NHI New Learning Management System

The Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) National Highway Institute (NHI) has launched its new Blackboard® Learning Management System (LMS)!

This new platform is part of NHI’s ongoing redesign that aims to provide participants with a more engaging learning environment to better support learners’ efforts in improving the nation’s highway transportation system.

The new Blackboard® LMS design
NHI’s new LMS provides a more interactive and user-friendly platform, offering easier access to course information, simplified course registration, transcript viewing, and online management of profile information and passwords. Additionally, NHI has updated the terminology used to describe the types of training offered, providing a clearer representation of the new learning environment and course functionalities within Blackboard®. These updated titles for our delivery methods include:
1. In-Person Training [formerly Instructor-led Training (ILT)].
2. Virtual Instructor-Led Training [formerly Web-conference Training (WCT)].
3. Self-Directed Training [formerly Web-based Training (WBT)].

Currently, there are 20+ Self-Directed Training courses from a variety of different program areas available on the LMS. The additional NHI courses will continue to migrate between now and the fall of 2023. The course content will remain the same, however, the new platform will enhance the user experience with innovative features and increased flexibility.

Other types of training, such as In-Person and Virtual Instructor-led Training, are scheduled to be moved into the new LMS in early Fall. NHI aims to have the Blackboard® LMS fully launched by late Fall.

How to access the new Blackboard® LMS
To get started on the Blackboard® platform, learners will need to create a new account via the new Genius+Blackboard system. Different registration instructions apply depending on whether the learner is a non-federal user or a federal employee user. NHI has provided an Account Creation Instruction Guide to help navigate the account creation process, the user dashboard, and course registration.

For users experiencing challenges with the LMS platform, Blackboard® offers a dedicated support helpdesk located on its homepage to assist with any system errors. If you have any questions regarding course content, please contact the NHI customer service center.

NHI strives to be an innovative source of high-quality training for our constituents in the transportation community. To continue improving the learning experience, NHI has implemented course evaluations at the completion of each training. We ask that learners take the time to provide feedback on their training experience, including thoughts on new features, any issues with course material or content, as well as overall opinions on the new Blackboard® platform. In addition, we plan to implement face-to-face focus groups to receive direct feedback from participants in the future. Sign up for NHI’s email list to stay updated on feedback opportunities!
